| Saying "we agreed to give residents back some of THEIR OWN MONEY" is just a silly cliche. Taken to its logical conclusion, why not give residents back all of their own money - then there will be no public services at all and you'll be in Tory heaven. The fact is you chose to perform this stunt in the run-up to the local elections. If this is not so, then how come you didn't do it after you won in 2006 - or perhaps in 2007 or 2008? The answer is that you deliberately left enough money in reserve to do it as an electoral trick and you miscalculated that the Labour group would fall into the trap of opposing it (so you could then put out "In Touch" leaflets proclaiming that they were against the Cash Back). How much did it cost to administer this stunt? You already knew you had the spare money, so why didn't your administration simply levy a lower council tax for the financial year, thus avoiding the expense of returning the money? Well the electorate told you what they thought of your stunt when they showed you the door. |
