I'd echo some of the comments made earlier in this thread that rather than vigils there needs to be a change in the system in which women get genuinely disinterested advice when they are considering a termination. The fall in adoptions and rise in abortions we have seen over the last few decades is a scandal and a tragedy. Whether it is constituted as a non-profit organisation or a business, its income and the income of the people who work there grows the more abortions that they perform. The Care Quality Commission have found instances of follow up calls being made to women who chose not to go ahead and targets being set by their clinics. Marie Stopes herself was an enthusiastic proponent of the kind of eugenics suggested by Simon Deakin. The system requires women to go to an organisation which has a vested interest in them having an abortion. As others have suggested, if within any clinic that is predominantly funded by the NHS, there was a requirement to have independent advice about the options a woman has then there would be no real excuse for people to hold vigils outside clinics. |
