Simon, you have implied that part of the function of abortion is to reduce the number of children born to mothers who are less able financially to care for them. That is quite a dangerous road to start out on. You clearly have never been present for an ultrasound scan if you believe a child in the womb is not alive and aware. The difficult question is when that life and awareness qualifies it for rights as a person. Your view that this doesn't come into play even eight months into a pregnancy is an extreme one that most people wouldn't agree with. While I don't have a strongly held view on the issue I do think that those holding the vigil do have a point when it comes to adoption. Two very good sets of friends of mine were unable to adopt in this country and were forced to go abroad - many years later both adopted children have grown into happy well-adjusted people who are part of a loving family. Adoption levels in this country have dropped to historical lows - this makes little sense given the dysfunctional state of the system for children in care in this country. If you talk to people who have been through it you will be shocked and they say current cutbacks are making it worse. Although I believe your neo-Malthusian views are nonsense they don't really apply here in the UK where we do need to get our birth rate up if we don't want a chronically unbalanced population in demographic terms. Adoption is probably going to be an option only for a small proportion of women considering an abortion but it is surely a good thing that they are made aware of the possibility. |
