| This makes a huge deal of sense. There is perhaps a case for the Euro to be made if you argue that the huge problems that Europe has are not caused by the single currency but just brought into the light by it. Fiscal profligacy and dysfunctional banking system is always going to end in tears and it is really just a question of who pays the price. Under the Euro it seems like the Germans are prepared to stump up for quite a lot of it. I wish I could be as sanguine as you about what happens next. You and Helena are quite right to say that the Irish border question is a huge problem. There seem to be two possible solutions - move the border to the sea or accept that only continued single market membership is workable. A Government dependent on DUP votes for survival isn't going to go for option one and the red lines that have been set down by Theresa May (and end to Freedom of Movement and no ECJ) seem to rule out the Norway option while she is prime minister. I'm finding it had to see beyond the talks completely stalling over the border question and the British Government angrily denouncing the EU for being unreasonable in a bid to blame them for no deal being reached. It will probably be global financial markets hammering the pound that will pull us back from the brink rather than government pragmatism but by that stage we will be in the midst of a full-blown economic crisis. |
