While Stirling Road won't be as contaminated as the Southall Gasworks site there still will be some remediation needed which would have added to the cost of residential development. Even so it is surprising to see the council not using the site for housing. Broadway Living has to spend the proceeds of the huge loan and that would have gone to council coffers but perhaps their most desperate need at the moment is for income not capital so letting the site out might be the best option for them. The costs savings aren't going to be so great because a large proportion of the waste that went to Stirling Road will end up in Greenford. I think it is all done through the West London Waste Authority anyway so the savings will be diluted. I'm sure it would make sense if someone from the 'open and transparent' council deigned to explain it to us but as they won't even confirm the date of closure that seems unlikely. |
