So more longer local vehicle movements will be required. Totally contradicts the whole ethos of local neighbourhoods and exposes all the hypocrisy damaging the real issues of environment. Aside from that, Far few vehicles are ULEZ exempt than is being publicised. Also hidden in the small print is that compliancy exemptions are subject to change without consultation and current compliant vehicles are only compliant for X amount of years. Effectively, you will have to change a vehicle every 6 -7 years. For most that's unaffordable. That's hardly a good use of resources given that a car, even modestly maintained will last 25 years plus and the energy consumed in it's manufacture means it has to last at least 23 years . Buses and HGVs used to last a very long time fully recovering their build and overhaul costs through revenue and such longevity. Now an energy efficient bus or car is a complete contradiction. Far higher costs, use of toxic materials and poor actual efficiency of electric vehicles, heavier unladen weights all add to a higher ratio of raw material waste which cannot be recovered from recycling unless it's working life extends to a maximum. In simple terms moving the problem but not solving it. |
