As the development potential of the site is significant this seems to me unlikely. Additionally I wasn't aware that Ealing's allowances were particularly generous by any meaningful benchmark. A cabinet position on any local authority will require a lot of work for which the allowance is rarely equivalent to the hours and expertise required. Councillors' allowances are a tiny proportion of overall staff costs in local authorities but these are impossible to cut. It is more expensive in the short term to let people go than keep them on and a nationally negotiated pay deal mean that salaries rose across the board during the pandemic when that of the average council tax payer declined significantly. Something needs to be done about this as councils across the country are likely to be driven to disastrous, wrong headed decisions such as closing this tip out of desperation. Anything that offers short term cash to cover up budget shortfalls will be considered. This isn't going to be a problem unique to Ealing. |
