This ignores the fact that any deselection process is rarely going to reach its conclusion because the MP will announce their retirement or leave the party before the outcome. A significant number of Labour MPs are no more as a result. Labour has also recently changed the system to make it easier to launch a challenge and that is only coming into play right now so we will see soon just how many more MPs are going to get the boot. The problem with devolving too much power to local party memberships has become evident recently with both Labour and Conservatives. Both parties are now primarily concerned with appealing to a narrow base rather than developing a broad appeal. The problem is particularly acute with Labour where low membership requirements means that it is subject to entryism. Maybe it is a generational thing but what I often hear from longstanding Labour party members is that key votes within the party are increasing dominated by people who do nothing else for the party than turn up to those votes. |
