It strikes me that Rupa Huq, in common with many Labour candidates largely ignored Jeremy Corbyn in her election literature. The message seemed to be "Vote for me as there is no chance of Labour winning. Unfortunately this contributed to a far better result for Labour than expected and shored up the leadership of Corbyn. The main feature of Ealing Central and Acton was that is was a knife-edge three way marginal. In 2015, the Lib-Dem vote collapsed, with their voted going mainly to Labour. In 2017 there seems to have been some movement from Tory to Labour. I would guess that mainly ex Liberal voters slipping over, mainly due to Brexit. It is interesting to note that Joy Morrissey lost in 2017 with more votes than Angie Bray won with in 2010, so who knows what will happen next time. It in entirely feasible that an early election will morph into a referendum rerun, with Tory vs Lib-Dem, and Labour being squeezed out, but I wouldn't put any money on it! We do indeed live in interesting times. |
