I like Rupa but she's ominously silent on the plight of Ealing libraries. But she's unlikely to engage in 'Red on Red' attacks, and she's possibly friends with many of the councillors. It is incredibly sad what's happening with the libraries. Neighboring boroughs aren't decimating theirs; they're investing in them in fact. Tory cuts to councils is clearly a factor, but what sign does it send out when libraries, which educate many and are an innate public good, aren't considered valuable? Ealing is like Haringey; another Zone 2-3 council with lots of land for property developers to ransack, with a council happy to oblige. Councillors are very much from the New Labour era (Bell supported Liz Kendall, remember) and view this role as a means of feathering their own nest (will Bell seek the Ealing North vacancy - hopefully Momentum are active within that CLP!) rather than serving the public. In Ealing, to be honest, there is no difference in voting Labour or Conservative. Both would be happy to starve services and sell the family silver. |
