That’s a can of worms. I was never ‘taught democracy’ at school. I was taught to read and write first of all, then I was taught how to examine things, evaluate and appraise and ultimately make judgements. That’s what education is. It’s not about instilling one set of opinions as the only ones that are valid. We have a problem now in universities where speakers are no platformed because their views might be controversial or go against the perceived norm. Ironically those people who now advocate the no platform angle are often from sections of society who themselves were once viewed as being outside the ‘norm’. The internet is not the answer. It has too much wrong information on it. Books at least are edited and corrected so one presumes the facts are at least correct, even if they may become outdated. If you keep the population ignorant enough they won’t challenge the status quo as long as they have enough to eat and enough to amuse themselves. At least with a library I can encourage my children to go in and pick up a book or two that will help inform their opinions as the develop. Close the library and that option disappears. |
