Dear all, Perhaps I could clarify. This all started with an amendment to a motion tabled at full council at which point the Lib Dems suggested that the council should implement a special permit for carers. Given that details of such a permit or concession needed to be discussed in detail and that this was planned for the next meeting of the CPZ Scrutiny Panel this is what Labour councillors supported. After all, members of this thread have raised the details that would need to be considered before simply adding yet another type of permit. There was limited discussion at the panel meeting mainly with myself suggesting how it might be possible to, for instance, deal with the case of someone who had recently had terrible news of a critical illness and suddenly needed extra care. This is a complicated area as many carers are members of one's own family and so will be eligible for a regular permit, whilst others are professionals and that should be dealt with differently to unpaid carers. I did put forward some suggestions as to how it might work by limiting the bureaucracy and we are working on how this might look. I do hope that the chair of the committee Phil Taylor will take on board the points as he did not appear to show a 'can-do' approach to the subject. Hope this throws light on the questions asked. Best wishes, Cllr Bassam Mahfouz |
