Phillipa , your claim that people driving vans could cycle instead is one that you might want to reconsider. I would respectfully suggest that in all but a miniscule number of cases such a switch would be impractical. The notion that a modal shift to cycling could make a difference to traffic and pollution also needs more examination. The reality is that a tiny minority of vehicle journeys are substitutable by bike and even if the majority that could be were you would only achieve a marginal benefit to traffic as bikes take up road space to and you reduce the benefit of taking vehicles off the road if the ones that remain take longer. The only viable solution to London's traffic and pollution problem is better public transport but that isn't something that will be on the horizon for many years now. What we must avoid is basing policy on a misconception which will result in traffic being made worse. |
