I have to take a different point of view, as we have heard from various sources that temperatures are hotter now than in the 80s. On your point, "And what's with TFL and everyone and their dog over-reacting and getting hysterical about you carrying water with you, no one carried water before the 80s and we survived just fine." The levels of overcrowding from both commuters and tourists are significantly higher now than in the 80's. For example, the Piccadilly line trains were only 10 years old and fit for purpose; they are now over 50 years old, outdated, and cramped. You may also be aware that fewer London residents have access to gardens due to population increase and flat living. Generally, flats without Air conditioning are harder to keep cool than older houses with gardens. With increased levels of house insulation, homes now retain heat more and are more challenging to cool. We have also seen the horrific consequences in Paris in the early 2000s when there was no warning or provision of help for those who are at greater risk of dying (the older, the very youngest and those with health conditions). I would suggest the best thing to do, rather than boast about how well you can cope with the heat and others becoming weak or wimps, is to check on your elderly friends and Neighbours with the offer of a cooling drink and assistance to keep cool.
