I've not seen data for the Uxbridge Road through Ealing but there have been statistics published for places like Putney and Chiswick which show that the majority of vehicular pollution comes from buses. The measure used was NOx rather than particulates and if you were to take the latter the amount from cars would be negligible because modern cars emit hardly any particulates. How this squares with the claim that a family car emits more NOx than a bus is difficult to understand. Maybe a very large family car and a very green bus were used in the comparison. However, buses are worth the pollution they cause because of the other benefits they bring most notably a cheaper form of transport for those on lower incomes. What's more on the Uxbridge Road we are set to become a clean bus corridor with only the latest low emission buses set to be used. This will make a massive difference to local air quality. |
