The argument that the car prevents isolation is a fallacy. The car creates isolation as people walk out of their front doors straight into their parked cars and off. No chance encounters with their neighbours.

The best way of staying fit and active (and mentally active) is to use active transport which means walking and cycling. If you look at the UN's Blue Zones report it uses the example of US pensioners being frail and immobile and suffering from dementia significantly earlier than people who have active lives. It's because their muscles and joints have atrophied due to lack of use.

If we're going to hit our legally binding Paris CC targets then the next sector we have to address is transport. Maybe not working and living and shopping locally is something thats going to have to change. Flying as much as we do certainly will have to.

The Mini Hollands across London have been a massive success for getting people active, getting people together, cutting air pollution and rebuilding communities. West Ealing has a once in a life time crack at getting itself together, and making it better for the humans who live, work and shop there.

Live longer and have a better quality of live whilst at the same time stop harming your neighbours and get on your bike!
