It would be very hard to work out the exact impact of push bikes on pollution if not impossible but you can't simply assume that because they are not directly responsible for emissions they aren't an indirect cause. The main reason they would increase pollution particularly on the Uxbridge Road is because they share space with buses in bus lanes. Everytime a bike slows a bus it makes the most polluting vehicle on the road emit a bit more harmful toxins. But even in general traffic they would tend to slow flows a bit.

The offset to this should be modal shift i.e. people giving up cars to ride bikes therefore reducing congestion. Unfortunately the research done so far suggests that the overwhelming proportion of people who cycle have switched from public transport or walking rather than private cars.

It should be stressed that if there is a negative impact on pollution from bikes it will be very marginal and there are lots of other good reasons to encourage people to use this mode of transport.
