| In our oil-based economy methane (or natural gas) is a byproduct of oil production. What do we do with it? Apparently methane CH4 is twenty times worse as a greenhouse gas than the carbon dioxide that is produced when it is burned so venting it into the atmosphere is not an option. What was once hailed as a fuel which as a by-product of the oil industry would give us all free central heating has turned out to be energy-intensive to separate, purify, transport and pump, etc., and what do we do with it other than burn it, so gas boilers are with us to stay unless we can do something else with it. |
