This is more of the 'There Is No Alternative' mantra. The Ealing Broadway Centre was designed and built after many years of conflict lead to some years of local consensus. Most people think the centre has given over 25 years of good service. The Arcadia landowner, with the support of Ealing Council, had a go at doing what it wanted to do. The Government turned down the landowner's plans. The landowner has now gone belly up and the new landowner - the Irish Governemnt - is trying to find someone else to buy the land and the propertities. Do we all want to go through a repeat of the Arcadia saga or begin a new process in which local residents discuss with the new landowner and the Council how the land/properties might be used/re-used/replaced? I'm sure there is a compromise set of requirements that could be thrashed out. Then we could look forward to consensus rather than Arcadia-type confrontation. With over 16 million annual passenger journeys taking place at the totally inadequate Ealing Broadway Station the landowner's tenure of Villiers House (on top of the station) and the station forecourt is of material concern. Turning a 19th Century railway station into a 21st Century integrated transport hub will not happen without the involvement of all local, regional and national stakeholders. BTW I suspect Network Rail may never agree to anyone building 20+ storey structures over the railway lines in the centre of Ealing. |
