"Sense of belonging" - yes, this is true. My theory is that the 'moat' of major roads (N Circ, A40, A4) gives that feeling of subtle community within (and around) - it's why for example we cycle around inside Ealing the same way we used to in Cambridge, with lights (!) but without the body armour and 'attitude' needed to get round other places in London. There's a definite 'haven' feeling inside the moat, and the sense of belonging comes partly from this I think. In other parts of London you never quite know where your bit stops and elsewhere begins, and people tend not to regard someone from the other end of the patch as neighbours the way people do in Ealing. |
