Most people I know who moved to London to start careers lived in shared houses, what are now called HMOs, because it was affordable and a good way to make new friends. Houses were shared with four or five others, and housemates would come and go as they moved into different phases of their lives. Sharing communal spaces like kitchens and living rooms encouraged social interaction and co-operation. Will these mega HMOs do the same? Probably not. And those bemoaning the cost and scarcity of private rentals should examine the real reasons for this, rather than cite the mantra of not enough homes being built.
