There is a desperate need for affordable and social housing but it’s not being built. These HMOs are targeted at young professionals who might otherwise be renting a shared house with two or three others, but the targeting of private landlords as some sort of evil entity has made those scarcer and more expensive. On another thread there was mention of the cost of renting in one of these HMOs as around £1500 a month, which is quite a lot for basically a room. There’s also no guarantee that building regulations have been adhered to in terms of noise control. There’s a new report out criticising existing policy on affordable housing and that the wrong types of home are being built, if built at all.
