Nationally, there are less than 10 cases of Weil's infections in humans in a typical year. The Bacteria enter through skin abrasions or via the eyes, nose or mouth. Of these cases, most are due to direct contact with rat urine, or water containing rat urine e.g. golfers retrieving balls from contaminated water. Dogs (as with many other animals) can catch Weil's unless they are vaccinated - which most are. There haven't been any recently reported cases of humans catching Weil's from contact with dog urine, and the only way of ruling it out would be to stop all animals that can contract it (including foxes, birds and cats) from entering parks - and on that basis all humans with flu like symptoms as well - just in case. |
