High turn-outs occur when people think that their vote will make a difference. Hypothetically if the choices were only of identikit spin with no underlying difference in substance, it would be inevitable that there would be a low turn-out. It is the responsibility of the political parties and candidates to attract people to the polls, and they should take the blame where they fail. Similarly if an election becomes tainted with dirty tricks and racism, people may reasonably decline to participate. This election has elements of both. Primarily it is a triumph of presentation over content. All major candidates are wandering about moaning about litter and ant-social behaviour, and making no statements of policy at all. It is the single most parochial election I have ever seen. I look to our Councillors to kick Council officials into action for local matters. I thought I was paying an MP to give me a voice, however small, in national policy |
