Far more people seem concerned about paying inheritance tax than ever have to actually pay it - about 45,000 families a year. A lot of these are in London because of our much higher house values which push more people into paying inheritance tax. But as increased house values mainly come about through no personal effort of the owner, it's not so unreasonable to tax them. I've always thought inheritance tax should be paid, not by the estate of the deceased but by the recipient of such good fortune. This would also encourage people to spread their assets around among more beneficiaries to reduce the overall tax bill, particularly favouring those on low incomes. |
