Think about it like this....I have to pay quite a lot of tax on the income I generate by going to work every day.  Fine.  If a relative dies, why would I get the income from their estate without paying any tax?

It depends on your perspective.  Sure the person who earns the money pays tax on it and the remainder is then there's to spend as they wish.  If it passes to someone else as inheritance though, I think they should pay at least as much tax on what they get as anyone working for a living.  That person has done nothing to earn the income so why should they get it tax free?

The government has to generate revenue tax somehow.  Taxing inheritance windfalls is better than the alternative in my view.  Enforcement is difficult though.
