It's not right to say that inheritance tax is unfair because it taxes money twice. Most times money changes hands it gets taxed. If it's passing from the person that earned it to someone else, why shouldn't it be taxed? Also people have pointed out that London houses often get caught by inheritance tax. My bet would be that most of those estates are sat on huge, untaxed capital gains. I get a bit frustrated when older generations get so protective about wealth that's mostly generated through living through a huge appreciation in asset prices. I'm sure you worked hard, just like most people in my generation, but that doesn't mean that you're morally immune from paying tax. |
