| Peter, it's worth noting that if you and your girlfriend had been married then there would have been no inheritance tax to pay, however much your house was worth. Marriage is not just 'a piece of paper'. IT was originally intended for the ultra rich, but now catches many ordinary people. Even though it's still only about 5% of estates that pay it, it creates a lot of bad feeling. |
