I thought we lived in a Tory run borough? If you remember rightly (and I'm no apologist for Labour) it was the Tory government that abandoned the idea of public sector traffic wardens. It felt traffic wardens were a burden on the public purse. Instead, traffic control was put out to tender. This has had a negative affect on how the streets of Britain are patrolled for traffic. The introduction of traffic wardens was for one reason only: to keep traffic flowing and preventing vehicles from blocking roads. When traffic wardens were public servants this was their main function. Wardens would tell a motorist to move on before issuing a ticket as a last resort. Their job was solely to keep traffic moving. Now the minimum wage immigrant workers employed have only one function; to raise revenue for the privately owner traffic patrol companies who have to hit a target to make their tender profitable. Traffic flow is of no consequence in the new economy. It would be interesting to do a comparison study of the cost to the tax payer of the old style wardens versus new wardens. What Thatcher envisioned as a saving is likely to cost, if you look at the bigger picture, a lot more. |
