Forget semantics. The score will be Lose/Win. What it means is that you will be the unfortunate recipient of tardiness, possibly exacerbated by a postal strike and Christmas post. But you will be reminded of this largesse nearer the local election date in May because you will receive it later.

Perhaps you will have to stand in a long queue to retrieve your money from the Town Hall - reminiscent of bread queues during the war. You would have even more time to reflect on  your voting intentions.

Paying by DD, if it is manageable, is not such a bad thing is it? One less thing to think about? It avoids arguments over the offer to pay by monthly instalments when people forget to pay their instalment  in cash.

Paying by DD to the Utility companies gives us a discount.

What would impress me about lower tax would be if the Council – another Utility, offered a discount, as they are legally empowered to do, on payment of the tax in full on 1 April each year. I wish they would cost this and tell us if it would cost 6 million or far less or far more.

Perhaps we should all have a DD strike for a year, so they see how much money they will lose.
