The ONS estimates are underpinned by the 2021 census returns. Figures from the latest census of England and Wales show 44,811 people in Ealing said they had such an impairment as of March 2021 – 14.6% of the area's population. Of these people, 24,943 (7.8%) said their disability stopped them from carrying out regular activities 'a little', while 19,868 (6.8%) said it did so 'a lot'. The census figures are higher as the ONS data excludes people idnetified with disabilities due to mental health issues. So there we have it 14.6% with disabilities as opposed to <5% who cycle. Anyone who believes that this is equitable needs to take a long hard look at themselves and reflect on the fact that all of us are but a couple of heartbeats away from disability. |
