| Raymond is spot on as ever. I would add that councils are not only ignoring the concerns of the Fire and Rescue services, but also blaming them for the problems caused by LTN barricades. This was brought to the fore back in April when a house caught fire in Whitestile Road in Brentford. The fire engines couldn’t get through because the council had recently barricaded the road as part of an LTN. One of the fire engines had to turn back and divert via the A4 and Ealing Road just to reach the fire. Confronted by evidence like this, most responsible local councillors would commiserate, apologise, or even admit that LTNs are a potential killer. Not in Brentford, though. Here’s what a Guy Lambert, one of Brentford’s local councillors had to say: “I don't understand why the fire service have yet to cotton on that - after 6 to 9 months - certain routes that were historically available are not any more.” Cllr Lambert’s message is clear: if your house burns down because the fire engines can’t get through, don’t blame the council. Blame the fire brigade instead. |
