Arthur, You, I and others have fought for 20 years to stem the growth of CPZs in order to protect the shops and businesses that are the ‘collateral damage’ of the unfair scheme. There have been times when shops and businesses were not even consulted because the Council insist on all things ‘resident’, ignoring the fact that shops and businesses are an established part of the community. Now, the final piece of jigsaw is about to be fitted in Northfields and Walpole with the great and potentially unknown costs to those residents, in addition to the loss of a substantial number of parking spaces. I gather that permit charges now start at £53 but owners and employees of local shops do not qualify for them. How are these people expected to get to work at unearthly hours and carry out their daily operations? I have a delivery van which is out and about six mornings per week and in order to park it in Northfields, I am expected to pay £800 for the same space as the £53 permit. These costs to small businesses are potential killers and many businesses are at risk. Let’s hope for some help in the Budget. |
