One of the reasons that the buses are slow is of course because of the amount of traffic. It is a bit of a Catch 22 situation.

This is why pressure groups and feedback on the public transport systems are so important. There used to be a website called www.fixmystreet.com and you can still see some of what it did on the net.  It helped people with the same travel problems to get together to get them sorted out.

Another problem is the paving over of front gardens to make car spaces.  This reduces the parking available to others in a street. And then when CPZs are introduced they reduce it even more as a lot of double lines on corners are included.  A CPZ just pushes the parking from one area to another until there is very little parking.  Some residents will have parking but tradesmen and carers then have great trouble in parking and the elderly may find that their families and friends can't visit easily.
