| British schoolchildren receive significantly less teaching hours than other countries - in fact British Teachers "teach" around 25% less hours than peers abroad. One of Gove's reforms is to extend the school day and increasing hours for both tuition and extra curricula activities.This is both sensible and long overdue, and presumably one of the reasons that the Unions are resisting it so strongly. As well as raising educational attainment and creating more time for sports / children to do exercise, the reforms could also make the lives of working parents a lot easier by stopping the headache of organising childcare for kids that get home from school at 3:20 pm. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educationopinion/10614082/Longer-school-days-will-let-pupils-blossom.html |
