There are too many variables to know precisely which are the better schools. The only way you would know for sure is to transfer the cohorts wholesale from state to private and vice versa and measure the outcomes. My guess would be that the outcomes for pupils would be largely unchanged other than some of the brighter private school students would achieve less in the state system. This is because the state school view of a 'qualified teacher' someone who has post graduate teacher training whereas the private schools place more emphasis on subject expertise. So in the state system a teacher with a doctorate in physics may be deemed unqualified despite the fact that research shows, unsurprisingly enough, that there is a correlation between pupils' achievement and the level to which their teacher has been taught in the subject they are teaching. |
