No Paul. You have the wrong end of the stick, yet again! Bell is demanding money from elsewhere to fix the problems with London's roads and transport infrastructure, when he is sitting on a very large pot which would go a long way to alleviating some of the worst roads in the capital, those in Ealing. I'd invite you into the real world where most of the rest of us live and suggest you understand that road traffic isn't going to disappear overnight, no matter how much you wish it would. Forget private motor vehicles for a second. How would your rubbish and recycling be collected every week without the huge trucks that carry out that task? How would you get your Amazon delivery without the vans and lorries that whizz them about? What about buses? They are very heavy indeed, so perhaps you'd like to see them taken off the roads to protect those fragile surfaces? The list goes on. You are also wrong about why pavements are cracked. The pavements on the road on which I live are terrible, yet nobody parks on them and nobody ever has in all the years I've lived here. There is enough space on the carriageway. The damage is caused by tree roots, primarily, but also by frost action, water damage and, of course, the carelessness of the people who come along to fiddle about with water, gas and other utilities. All that is exacerbated by years of neglect by the council. They've happily relaid pavements elsewhere, but seem incapable of managing a sustained level of investment to improve them for everyone. My kids had all manner of mishaps when they were younger because the paving was so uneven. |
