I'm not sure that the support of the Trade Unions or the Royal Colleges really counts for anything. There's no better evidence of the quality of their judgements than the fact many medics fought tooth and nail against the establishment of the NHS in the first place, claiming that it would damage patient care.

By way of a historical example, GPs initially advocated a greater provision of services under their direction as an alternative to the NHS, but 50 years later claimed that this exact model would be dangerous when the proposals for Polyclinics were made.

What you see when you look at the behaviour of the professions over any length of time is that they typically work solely for their members' interests and are far too driven by considerations of their personal remuneration as is the case now.

GPs were supposed to have improved primary care in return for a 40 pay rise and dropping night time responsibilities. 6 years on, and with average GP pay now touching £115K / £130K for dispensing GPs, the quality of care hasn't risen, GPs are working less hours than before and to cap it all, they've offered to take back responsibility for night services in return for additional pay. Nowhere in this have the interests of patients (or tax payers) received proper consideration.
