Yesterday morning on my way to Northfields station I noticed a huge hanging basket on the pavement. It was in full bloom and I initially thought some vandal or other had pulled it down. I then noticed another and another etc. I then saw an Ealing truck with a man in the back picking up the lovely full bloom baskets and flinging them into the back of the truck. It seems these were being replaced by "winter baskets" full of ivy and green plants and shrubs. My question is, is that a sensible use of public funds at this particular time bearing in mind rising council taxes and miscellaneous cuts in funding and benefits etc? As far as I was concerned there was absolutely nothing wrong with the baskets that were already there. They were still very colourful and looked healthy enough to me. They have now been replaced by, albeit probably very expensive and I suppose seasonal, baskets that currently look very drab. In fact, if I hadn't witnessed the change over I doubt I would have ever noticed them. I'm all for trying to dress up areas and make them cheerful and attractive etc., but these things cost a fortune and I'm not sure they should be featuring in council expenditure at the moment. Of course maybe I'm wrong and the shops and business in the area pay for them but somehow I doubt it. |
