If anything I'm agreeing with your post higher up where you say you blame nothing other than Tesco penny-pinching, Graham. I agree that the reasons are simple and financial, as the most logical and sane explanation. If my wording sounds exasperated, it's not out of lack of sympathy for your concerns, but for the way the absence of a Christmas tree is being repeatedly used as an ideological football by those who like nothing better than to stick the occasional knife into non-white immigration, by however snide and sideways a route they can. It starts as a nebulous anti-PC line, then gets to the point of spiteful comments about pigmentation, which I for one find very distasteful as a remark, hoever indirect and 'in jest'. For all the efforts of the more moderate like yourself to say that any allegations are more about the political correctness of the authorities rather than the wishes of any actual immigrant (most of whom have Xmas trees at home for the kids, I suspect), the fact is that once we're reduced to innuendos about skin colour, for whatever reason, the debate has definitely gone in the wrong direction. |
