The difference with the traction batteries in milk floats (I trained as an electrical engineers with Chloride the largest traction battery manufacturer) is that they are barely stressed and have quite an easy life. Maybe 20 miles per day and then home for a lovely slow trickle charge. Being virtually all lead-acid cells and air-cooled, the charging equipment was really basic as a simple float charger. No risk of fires, alhough there was always the risk of an hydrogen gas explosion. Compare that with what is expected of a modern EV, high discharge rates, ultra-fast charging, complex liquid cooling and with that goes the increased chance of one of those 500 or so little bombs of a lithium ion cell 'letting go' and catching fire. |
