| Flats are certainly appropriate for a great many people. Not many want to live with the insecurity of having a private landlord and the prospect of renting at market rates for the rest of their lives. Not everyone wants a garden. Not everyone wants to cope with the work and costs required to maintain (and improve where funds allows this) the fabric of an old building that was as much a product of speculative builders in their day as companies today. Having moved from an early 20th century terrace house to a modern flat I am delighted no longer having to deal with loose slates, overflowing gutters, faulty pipes and wiring unsuitable for modern living. My flat is light, airy, is very well insulated and has a large balcony. With just as much living space as I had before but even at current prices, a heating bill that is only half of what I was paying 5 years ago. |
