A key point has been missed here that a cinema has been built so even if Tricia's very sensible suggestion of making it contingent on no flats being sold before it was completed was implemented, we would still be in the same position.

What the planning process can't do is force a business to be set up to operate unprofitably and this is clearly what has been happening here. I'm sure Berkeley has suggested a management contract as the gaping hole in the middle of its development is undermining the whole concept.

Those blaming Julian Bell are admirable in their consistency to point the finger at him for everything that has gone wrong in the borough over the last decade and he is undoubtably culpable on some issues but not this one.

At some point, if the cinema doesn't open, it might be worth starting a discussion about what could be done with the space. Perhaps a theatre or a music venue might work there. I'm still hopeful that Picturehouse will come once its parent company is out of Chapter 11. Splendid as the Ealing Project is, the more choice the better in my view.
