Niall in response to your post about people clearing paths - Many years ago before I became totally decrepit my sister and I were tottering down Green Lane in Hanwell towards the Fox snow and ice all over the place, we were walking mainly in the road which appeared to have a small amount of grip then - there was a cleared stretch of pavement. I made a bee line for it and immediately ended up flat on my back severely damaged I may say. A man from the house next door to the clearing saw the accident and said I was the third person to crash to the ground that day. It was the only clear stretch of pavement in the road and the most lethal spot. It never occured to me to sue anyone in those days but times have certainly changed and have no doubt that nowadays someone would have a go. That said, if its done properly it would be good if all households cleared the stretch infront of their homes. Many years ago most people did this and I remember my father always clearing snow/ice from the front of our house but he always treated the cleared pavement with salt or sand or something and it never proved to be a booby trap. Everyone seems to think it's someone else's job nowadays - presumably an extension of the nanny state in which we live. |
