I sympathise, but may i also suggest that people consider their footwear, which makes a huge difference. This is a cultural thing - little old ladies in Switzerland have slip-on rubber spikes over their shoes, and my friend who broke his leg in France (the alps) was even given crutches with spikes on, for ice and snow. Here in the UK it always seems to be the Council's problem, while we all drive around on summer tyres and wear our summer shoes. It takes two surfaces to get a grip on each other, so please consider what's on your feet as well as what's on the road. To earlier comment about driving more slowly - agree in principle but my point is that there is NO speed that is safe if people just walk out in front of you without warning (especially at T junctions where there's usually a fan of ice). In fact crawling along at 3mph seems to just encourage them to do this ("oh, I've got plenty of time") but a car sliding at you at 3mph is still going to do a lot of damage. Of course one slows down, especially at crossings and other danger areas, but pedestrians also need to realise they need to signal their intention to cross and then *wait* to make sure the car has actually slowed sucessfully, not just wander up to a zebra and walk straight across without looking. |
