Statistics in these cases can be abused so much to justify anything. Working from home has probably had the largest effect on safety and the fact so many places were closed also meant that leisure use was down. Luckily i no longer live in Ealing because the fact that when driving on my usual routes i would have ended up making a much longer journey with more queues in polluted traffic and also using more petrol makes me feel that for climate change the ltns are a non starter. The safety angle can not be quantified easily is you would have to look at the overall figures that include the surrounding areas. safe cycle provision is not there. But one telling fact about all of this was that the people in charge never consulted with emergency services. The next fact is that they removed the barriers and replaced with cameras to make money!! When i lived in Hanwell my annual mileage was 26,000 per year but as my former colleagues are still working from home you can see the difference. Sadly LTN's have good intentions but like many things are part of tick box politics!! To show green credentials are important for appearances but real planning is needed. Ask the people what could be done to get them on bikes or public transport? |
