| In constituencies with large Labour majorities it's all the more important for local Party members to have a candidate/MP they can enthusiastically support and have confidence in. The £3 (and then £25) 'members' were registered 'supporters' who could make a one-off payment just to take part in the leadership elections. The proper membership of the Labour Party has increased hugely in recent years and the members now have a lot more say in contributing to Party policy, electing Party executives and selecting council and parliamentary candidates. This isn't disruption, it's democracy! |
