| Mandy Your vision – good shops, good restaurants, provision for local businesses – is one that pretty well all of us would sign up to. If that’s all that Glenkerrin were trying to build – plus perhaps a reasonable amount of housing - they would have had no problem. If you read their reports you’ll see that what both John Denham and the Inspector thought was wrong was the monumental scale of what was proposed which was completely out of keeping with the character of Ealing. They understood that too much would have been crammed into the site which is just what bothered all those local people who objected to the scheme in the first place. Through its unquestioning support for the development, Ealing Council has shown that it has been out of touch both with national planning experts and with the local Ealing community. Other councils like Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea take great trouble to look after their main architectural assets by ensuring that new developments respect and don’t overwhelm them. If they can, why can’t Ealing where in Haven Green and Christ Church for instance we have things that are really special? Of course we can all admire Hong Kong. But Ealing isn’t Hong Kong. It’s a low rise residential suburb and most of the people who live here love it for that. |
