One of the many joys of having an allotment is being able to try out whioh varieties of tomatoes, potatoes and other fruit and vegetables have a decent taste or, rather, a taste you happen to like. Yes, you may well be able to buy produce cheaper in the shops but that's not really the point. By trial and error you can work out which potatoes have flavour and are suitable for boiling, baking, roasting etc. They all have different qualities. With tomatoes, some of the ones we grew this year had no taste at all whilst others are fabulous. Growing your own allows you to grow and harvest exactly what you want as opposed to what varieties you are able to buy in a shop. In addition, you know exactly how they have been grown and what, if any, fertilisers and chemicals, have been used. |
