Its the second year I have an allotment but I know what Susan means. When my produce is ready, its at giveaway prices in the shop. And I'm not sure I am making a saving as by the time you feed your plants, spray them and the time you spend, it must be cheaper to buy in the shop. I dont pay for seeds now as I collect my own and do swaps with others. Then there are the bugs that attack your plants - I had no toms on my allotment this year due to blight! However, and its a big However, I love growing my own. The sense of pleasure when your plants flower and produce fruit - is well worth the effort. I have 20 jars of pickled gherkins and about 10 of pickled beetroot which we will eat through the winter with a deep sense of pride. My freezer is groaning with runner beans and shredded cabbage and my brussels are on the way. Nothing but nothing beats the taste of fresh homegrown produce. Try it Susan, You wont regret it despite the time and initial outlay involved. |
